EMPATHY ENTRY: I can definitely see how Empathy can help a person in day to day life. Empathy is important in making and maintaining relationships. It is important to empathize with patients as a doctor and to empathize with clients as a lawyer. I think in order for me to be a successful lawyer/ politician when I become older I will need to work on improving my sense of Empathy more than any of Pink's other senses. Out of all the senses, this is the most legitimate and pragmatic of the six. Empathy can be applied in the real world everyday, whether speaking with someone who is upset or determining what to do in social situations.
Empathy is related to Language Arts in the way the teacher is able to connect with her students on an emotional and caring level. English and language arts are the epitome of empathy as far as education goes since the students must learn to empathize with the characters in the books they are reading to better understand the nuances in any work of great writing. If students and teachers can put themselves in the places of the main characters in a book, or better yet, act out scenes in the book, they are better able to understand the storyline, motifs, and hidden meanings in any novel. Empathy can go further in the student teacher connection in that if a student feels like the teacher understands her, she would be more willing to ask questions or state her opinions without fear of rejection or looking silly. Empathy is important in any classroom, however as I have shown above, it serves a double role in an English or Language Arts classroom.
